Tips For Helping Children With Homework

  • Ask the child each day to show you their diary with the homework set for the night/week.
  • Some children benefit from a short break/snack before starting.
  • Do not let the child start the Homework too late.
  • Provide a space for the child to work that is as free as possible from distractions like TV.
  • Help the child check they have all they need to start and that they understand what they have to do.
  • Give the child hints, guidance and encouragement but do not do the work for the child.
  • Do not go over the time set for your child’s year level outlined in this policy. The oven timer/microwave clock is a useful reminders of the time.
  • If your child becomes distressed, angry or anxious about their homework stop where they are at and write a note in the diary explaining to the teacher that they have tried.
  • If homework could not be done for some family/health reason put a brief note in the diary for the teacher.
  • Make a time to talk with the teacher if your child is having difficulty completing their homework or understanding what they have to do.
